Holy Day Inn

As you know the Summer Camp sessions all end in the morning and require a pick up between 9 and 10 am by the parents. For many of you I know this requires a VERY early departure from home. This year we offered a new service for the parents/guardians: a Parent Specials at the Holy Day Inn at Hardtner Camp and Conference Center on the last night of each session (except for First Camp.) The Holy Day Inn is a motel type retreat facility with two twin beds per room with a private bath. Linens are provided and we would provide a light reception to meet other parents and a continental breakfast the next morning to the parents. You will be at camp to pick up your child without a long drive but be prepared for all the camp stories and songs on the way home! So a fresh start after a good nights sleep at the Inn will be awesome.

Your arrival at Hardtner Camp and Conference Center would be after 7pm on the last night of your child’s session. In order to keep the camp session child oriented and because not all parents will be available we would ask that you stay at the Inn and not get involved in Camper activities that night but we will have a host or hostess to greet you at the Inn and fill you in on the week’s activities. Spaces for the Parent Special are limited and given on a first come basis. Reservations require full payment of the Parent Special price of $35/person (includes room, reception and continental breakfast). Feel free to contact the Office for more information.

Counselor-in-Training (CIT) 2008

The Summer Camping Committee's goal is to bring 3 male and 3 female CIT's to the camp each summer. The camps to be worked are Jr. High 1, Primary and Jr. High 11.

The CIT's will not live in the cabins. They will live in an area designated by the camp director, but will work in cabins as assistants. CIT's will not be staff. They will receive ongoing training from the camp director throughout the summer. The program will be for individuals who have just graduated from high school.

CIT Training will be determined at a later date. All CIT's are required to attend this training. Training will continue through the time the CIT's are at camp.

CIT's have specific assignments to perform during their time at camp. Additional duties will be assigned by the Camp Director and by the Head Counselor. Deans and Camp Staff will not give duties to any CIT, but refer request to the Head Counselor.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

• Fill drink glasses with ice prior to all meals
• Wash Igloo coolers and make certain water & cups are available to be driven to the fields.
• Assist a Permanent Staff Member in a cabin each day on a rotating basis.

Summer Staff Information

Our Mission: The most important part of our camping program is the creation of a Christian community that encourages individual expressions of abilities, attitudes, and faith. The development of this community is basic to the camping program. We aid this development with regular participation in worship, sports, games (both competitive and noncompetitive), canoeing, fishing, swimming, drama, group discussions and activities, and music (both religious and secular).

What can I expect from Camp Hardtner?
Working at Camp Hardtner is a challenging and rewarding experience. You will be working closely with the other members of the Permanent Staff throughout the summer, building intimate relationships with one another as you grow in your spirituality. The work environment at camp can be
intense, but it is a fulfilling ministry.

What does Camp Hardtner expect of me?
Our goal for the summer is to see that the camping experience is successful, fun educational, spiritually enriching, and above all, safe. It is the responsibility of the Permanent Staff in conjunction with the Camp Staffs and Camp Director to see that this is accomplished.

In order to serve as a member of Permanent Staff, you must have completed one year of college or worked one year beyond high school. Camp Hardtner seeks persons who demonstrate a willingness to serve and a desire to help others grow in their faith. As a member of the Permanent Staff,
you will be trained during the first week of the summer. Included in this required training will be coverage in the areas of child protective service education and sexual harassment sensitivity training, "Safeguarding God's Children ". After training you will be expected to lead and/or participate
in the following:

1. Basic program duties:
__a. Planning and execution of the schedule of daily activities for campers.
__b. Development and execution of separate themes for each camping session in conjunction with Camp Staffs.
__c. Leading worship services as allowed by the Canons of the Episcopal Church (supervised at all times by a clergy under the direction of the Camp
Director) and attending all worship services.
__d. Group discussion as both leader and participant.
__e. Games, skits, and activities as teacher, helper, and participant.
__f. Development, direction, and participation in all programs including camp-wide sports competitions, plays, dances, skit nights, talent shows, music,
etc.
2. Cabin duties:
__a. Living in cabins with up to 12 campers per week
__b. Serving as friend and counselor to each camper
__c. Responsibility for cleanliness of cabins
__d. Conducting nightly devotions with the campers in your cabin
3. Special Skills Areas:
Some counselors will be responsible for a special skill area in addition to leading a cabin:
__a. Waterfront (4 or more)
-Current Life Saving or WSI certificate
-Current CPR certification
-Responsible for safety and supervision of activities in pool or on lakes
__b. Arts and Crafts (2 or more)
-Plans and executes Arts & Crafts program
-Coordinates purchasing of supplies for craft projects
__c. Driver (and assistant)
-Must be 21 years of age and have clean driving record
-Responsible for baggage distribution/collection on first and last days of each camp session
-Conducts scheduled supply runs to Pineville/Alexandria
-Drives campers to hospitals in emergencies as directed by camp nurse
__d. Music (3-6)
-Chooses appropriate music for worship
-Teaches/leads songs
__e. Sacristan (2-4)
-Prepares Chapel or other worship area for services in conjunction with clergy
__f. Audio-visual artist (2-3)
-Coordinates use of electronic equipment such as VCR, DVD, or CD players, television, video camera, etc.
__g. Sunshine (1)
-Recognizes and awards outstanding daily performances of Permanent Staff members
-Encourages Permanent Staff and boosts morale through skits, games, etc.

Compensation
You will be furnished room and board for the summer and will be paid $1,500.00 plus an additional $100.00 for each year of past service at Camp Hardtner. In addition, you will receive one canteen card and camp picture per session, and one staff picture for the summer. You will be provided a
complimentary camp staff shirt. You will be paid four (4) times throughout the summer.

Period of Employment
The summer will begin at 1 p.m. May 24, through 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30,2008. Some contracts may be extended.

Breaks begin immediately following the post-camp evaluation and camp clean-up that usually ends around mid-afternoon on the last day of each camp session.

Counselors must return to camp by 5 p.m. on the dates determined by the Director and the camp schedule.

The Camp Hardtner Camping Program continues to create an atmosphere of love and acceptance for campers, counselors and staff.

This is accomplished each summer with an organized program of worship, music and recreational activities that encourages creativity, and acceptance that allows God's love to flow freely.

Each summer, more than 500 young people attend the various camp sessions held at the Hardtner Camp & Conference Center. It takes many people to have a successful summer camping program, they include:

• A creative Training Staff who equip the counselors with the many skills they will need during the summer.
• The many Camp Staff members (adults) that come in each week with the program and share their creativity with the campers.
• The nurses, who bring tender loving care to the Infirmary.
• The CIT's (Counselors-in-training) who give a week or two to learn what it takes to be a counselor.
• The Permanent Staff (Counselors) - seventeen to nineteen outstanding young men and women who set the tone for a great summer. These folks share unconditionally their love, encouragement, creativity, support and their deep faith with the many campers that are entrusted to them during the summer.
