Home Work at Camp Healthcare Staff Job Description

Job Summary

Working closely with the Director, the Healthcare staff will oversee the health needs for children ranging from ages 7 to 18 and will live onsite for the summer term or single session. 

Accountability

The Healthcare staff reports directly to the Director

Desired Specific Qualifications

Applicant must be currently licensed to practice in the State of Louisiana and hold a RN, PA, APRN, or MD
Applicant experience or a background in pediatrics, school health, home health, or public health nursing is desired but not required
We will gladly consider new grads who have passed the boards
Applicant must be able to execute nursing duties in a varied, indoor-outdoor environment, including negotiating uneven outdoor ground and some medium lifting (25 lbs).

Applicant must complete a background check and Sexual Abuse Awareness and Prevention training.

Compensation 

Full Summer Employment- $6000, plus room and board

Single Session Employment-  $110/day OR free camper session, plus room and board

Performance Objectives (Abbreviated)

  • Reviewing camper health histories
  • Communicating health needs of campers to administration and counselors 
  • Distribution of prescription and over the counter medication
  • Providing first aid for minor injuries and illnesses
  • Maintaining accurate health logs
  • Speaking with parents and counselors as needed
  • 24 hour on-site coverage 7 days a week with relief time

Employment Dates

Full Summer Employment– May 28 – July 30, 2025

A full summer nurse receives time off between sessions as follows:

June 1-3:   12pm SUN to 1:30pm TUE
June 10-13:   12pm TUE – 1:30pm FRI
June 18-21:   12pm WED to 1:30pm SAT
June 27-29:   12pm FRI to 1:30pm SUN
July 5-8:   12pm SAT to 1:30pm TUE
July 13-16:   12pm SUN to 1:30pm WED
July 22-23:   12pm TUE to 12pm WED

Single Session Employment Options

All Single Session employment dates arrive and depart at noon

June 3-10
June 13-18
June 21-27
June 29 – July 5
July 8-13
July 16-22
July 23-30

Physical requirements

  • Ability to complete online child abuse awareness & prevention prior to first day of work
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Must have adequate vision and hearing to:
    • easily engage with camp community
    • respond to environment/activity specific hazards
    • effectively review digital or paper documents
  • Some physical requirements of working at camp will also include prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, running, swimming, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs; willing to work in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the elements (e.g., sun, wind, rain).

Performance Objectives (Detailed)

  1. Generally, to carry out a program of health and safety for all campers and staff. Nurses should participate in the program attending activities, as long as it does not interfere with primary nursing duties. In addition to a full-time Camp Nurse, most sessions may have an additional volunteer Camp Nurse who will work alongside full-time Camp Nurse
  2. Specifics:
    1. Become familiar with all policy and processes used by camp to run the infirmary, care for campers and staff, and maintain appropriate records.
    2. Review all health records prior to each camp session, ensuring records are complete and current, including health insurance, allergies, and vaccine records.
    3. Collect all medication, medical equipment, and first aid kits brought by campers. All medication must be in original container/bottle and will be administered as directed by the physician of camper according to prescription bottle label.
    4. Make personal, face-to-face, assessment of campers during session check-in to check for signs of illness.
    5. Complete allergy list during session check-in, providing complete forms to both camp kitchen staff and Director.
    6. Administer medications and treatments according to physician’s orders and keep records of all treatment on the MAR provided.
    7. Provide medical care and first aid according to the physician approved procedures located in the infirmary.
    8. Direct any camper or staff to local emergency room for injuries needing treatment beyond first aid or illnesses requiring physician or medical treatment not available at camp. 
    9. Be sure all treatments are recorded on the medical forms of each camper and staff. Return forms to director at end of session/summer. 
    10. Working with the Director, during staff training, discuss health and safety procedures, basic first aid, safety precautions, and Infirmary routines with staff. Direct staff on process for reporting or referring to Nurse all camper and staff injuries, illnesses, accidents and medical issues.
    11. Maintain complete medication and supply inventory of the infirmary. 
    12. Be responsible for the return of all medication to camp office at the end of each session for camper check-out. An inventory will be taken of camper medications remaining at the end of each session and what is not claimed by campers will be turned over to the director. 
    13. Complete a final inventory at close of camp and bring list of needed over-the-counter medications and supplies to office with completed camper profiles.

Accommodations/Life at Camp

  • Comfortable private room and a shared bathroom.
  • Meals are provided during camp sessions and some meals during breaks.
  • Laundry is available on site, WiFi available in some locations, and recreational activities available during break time.
  • Although professional, we are informal. We work in shorts and t-shirts in a warm, friendly atmosphere.
