Job Summary

Working closely with the Director, the Head Counselor functions as the team captain and community leader of the Permanent Staff, leading the daily implementation of the program and schedule.

Accountability

The Head Counselor reports directly to the Director

Desired Specific Qualifications

At least 21 years of age
Two summers of proven success as a leader on Camp Hardtner’s Permanent Staff

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
  • Ability to complete online child abuse awareness & prevention prior to first day of work
  • Ability to become certified in First Aid & CPR
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Must have adequate vision and hearing to:
    • easily engage with camp community
    • respond to environment/activity specific hazards
    • effectively review digital or paper documents
  • Some physical requirements of working at camp will also include prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, running, swimming, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs; willing to work in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the elements (e.g., sun, wind, rain).

Performance Objectives

1. Before and throughout the summer, ensure a safe, fun, faith-filled atmosphere is established and maintained for the campers and Permanent Staff/counselors

  • Reinforce camp philosophy, routines, rules, and safety procedures
    • Preside over all-camp-gatherings (Ex: end of day)
  • Incorporate prayer and reflection into daily routine of camp staff
    • Lead group prayers to open meetings
    • Plan and implement one staff devotional per week
  • Be perceptive of and responsive to the on-goings of Permanent Staff by direct involvement, mentoring staff, delegating, and seeking help
    • Praise positive staff behavior and manage undesired staff behavior in positive ways
    • Check in daily during program with each staff member
    • Meet daily with Director
  • Be perceptive of and responsive to the on-goings of campers by direct involvement, mentoring staff, delegating, seeking help
    • Make camper cabin and FG assignments taking into account requests and other considerations
    • Identify and help in significant camper management situations (homesickness, bullying, serious disclosures, other special concerns)

2. Conduct the Program Staff in implementation of camp goals/program

  • Prepare and administer the daily schedule
  • Assign & manage the counselors’ daily responsibilities for program, planning, preparation, cleanup, etc.
  • In daily meetings, manage the line of discussion so that the meeting stays on track
  • Convey daily information and ongoing updates between Director, Dean, and counselors

3. Implement any additional work responsibilities that may be asked of you
